FOSS R&D

Embedded Software Developer for Electronics Team

Innovating with Purpose

At FOSS, we are driven by a strong sense of purpose, and we hope you are too. A fast-growing world population means that global food production will have to increase by 60% by 2030 to meet demand. We want to come up with smarter ways to make the best use of agricultural resources, and to help eliminate food waste.

We are expanding our team of embedded software developers who are responsible for supporting our new electronics platform.

The workday you can look forward to

As part of the Embedded Software Platform team in the Electronics Department, your primary responsibility will be developing low-level software that supports electronic functions across our instruments. This includes creating robust, reusable solutions that integrate seamlessly with hardware components.

“As an embedded software developer at FOSS, I combine motors, lasers, spectrometers, and all sorts of other components into instruments that make food production smarter and more sustainable around the world. No two instruments are the same, and each one brings new challenges and opportunities to learn something new.” – Gustav Vinther-Jørgensen, Senior SW engineer.

You will work closely with electronics engineers to design and implement solid architectures that ensure reliability, maintainability, and scalability. Our platform operates on various microcontroller architectures using Zephyr OS, requiring strong hardware understanding, a structured approach, and high proficiency in C++ programming.

Your daily work will be at the FOSS Innovation Centre in Hillerød, Denmark, and we expect you to work on-site to support better internal collaborations.

What will make you fit in well

Success in this role demands:

  • Experience as software engineer or computer scientist
  • 5+ years’ expertise in low-level programming and embedded systems, possessing low level processor and hardware knowledge
  • Experience with developing embedded software in C++ and Zephyr or other similar OS. Strong C++ coding skills for developing efficient and maintainable solutions.
  • Experience with Bluetooth / WIFI connectivity
  • A genuine interest in instrument development
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with electronics engineers to align software and hardware design.
  • Focus on creating reusable, maintainable solutions for multiple instrument platforms.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and clear communication within a team environment.

To succeed in this role, you should be highly self-organized, proactive, and take ownership of your responsibilities. Strong problem-solving skills and the confidence to raise concerns are essential. You value simplicity, adopt a pragmatic and solution-oriented mindset, and design platform solutions that serve multiple use cases while remaining easy to maintain. Collaboration is key, you communicate status clearly to ensure team alignment. Experience with Continuous Integration (CI) in Azure DevOps is a plus, though not required. Ideally, you have experience from a similar role and can leverage that knowledge to gain traction quickly. You know your syntax and can solve complex problems.
